With the lead role in the Netflix rom-com ‘Office Romance’, a milestone for ‘On the Floor’ on Spotify and a new hit single, the artist seems to be back in full force.

Let’s be honest: the last few years haven’t been great for Jennifer Lopez. In 2024, she filed for divorce from Ben Affleck, which led to a lot of mocking comments in the press and on social media. After all, she first released an entire album (’This Is Me… Now’) and an accompanying musical film (’This Is Me… Now: A Love Story’) about their rekindled love for each other.
The singer also announced a tour of the same name across the U.S. and Canada, but it ultimately fell through. Although this wasn’t officially stated, low ticket sales seemed to be the main reason. To top it all off, there was also a lot of criticism about Lopez’s so-called diva behavior (which would totally be accepted behavior when it’s a man, but okay).
Back to Where It All Began
Today, it’s a movie that’s breathing new life into her career. In ‘Office Romance’, Jennifer Lopez stars as Jackie, a strict airline CEO who develops feelings for a new lawyer. But workplace romances are forbidden, and that leads to chaos. It’s a typical romantic comedy, but a smart move for Lopez.
In the film, actor Edward James Olmos plays her father, and this isn’t the first time. The two also portrayed father and daughter in the 1997 film ‘Selena.’ In this true-story drama, J.Lo portrayed singer Selena Quintanilla – the ‘queen of Tejano music’ – who was murdered by a fan. That role laid an important foundation for the rest of Jenny from the Block’s career, something she acknowledges herself. During her latest series of performances in Europe – in the summer of 2025, with stops mainly in Spain – she performed a cover of Selena’s ‘Si Una Vez.’ The connection between Lopez and Olmos is part of the reason why the film is being heavily hyped on social media.
A New Generation of Listeners
Television has also proven to be a major boost for streams of Lopez’s music. ‘On the Floor’, her well-known 2011 hit featuring Pitbull, gained new momentum thanks to the Prime Video series ‘Off Campus’ (based on the book series of the same name by Elle Kennedy). In the series, the character Allie dresses up as Jennifer Lopez – in the iconic green Versace dress – for a party and dances sensually to ‘On the Floor.’ The scene quickly went viral, and Jennifer Lopez herself jumped on it by making a video with the actress who plays Allie in the series. This way, the hit reached a new generation of listeners, or as J.Lo’s team puts it: ‘a new jeneration’.
Since then, the singer has reached the milestone of 43 million monthly listeners on Spotify. ‘On the Floor’ has also joined the music platform’s ‘Billions Club’, meaning the song has been streamed more than 1 billion times. And her latest single is also a hit. ‘Save Me Tonight’, a collaboration with David Guetta, is even getting heavy airplay on Belgian radio. Just to say that the tide can turn quickly once momentum builds.
‘Office Romance’ premiered on Netflix on June 5, and ‘Off Campus’ has been available on Prime Video since May 13.
